Thrown
/ Hand built / Slip cast items are made in our studio
All of our pottery is thrown or hand built in our
studio.
We use a variety of different coloured & temperature
clay bodies. These range from white, terracotta and black earthenware clays to white, buff and red stoneware clays.
All these clays can make thrown or hand built items.
Special liquid clay is used for the slip cast items, such
as ornaments, egg cups etc.
The appliqued items are left untill they
are starting to go hard then the applique is cut from rolled out clay and attached to the item.
Firing
All Items are fired in the kiln
twice.
When items are thoroughly dry they are bisque fired
to between 1050oC to 1100oC.
The bisque fired items are then ready to be decorated
and glazed.
Glazing
Items are either coloured with underglaze and
dipped in a clear glaze to make them glossy, or colour glazed using various techniques.
Some of the household ceramic items are bought
in as bisque pieces ready for decorating and glazing.
We decorate and glaze all of the items that
we sell, in our studio in Suffolk.
Lots of different decorating techniques are
used including dipping, printing, sponging and painting with a brush.
All items are then fired again at earthenware
or stoneware temperature (1040oC -1220oC).
Items intended for food use are decorated in
lead free glazes. They are NOT dishwasher safe.
